Sarawak’s Harmony - A Foundation For Growth And Prosperity, Says Premier

KUCHING, Dec 5 — Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg has attributed the state’s rapid development and harmonious coexistence among diverse communities to mutual respect and understanding cultivated over generations.

Speaking at the Majlis Apresiasi UNIFOR 2024 at Hikmah Exchange, the Premier emphasized the unique cultural and religious diversity of Sarawak, highlighting its role in fostering peace and stability.

“We are very thankful to God because, over the past year, we have been able to perform our duties to the people in a very harmonious environment,” he said. “This environment exists because of our mutual respect and understanding, irrespective of religious faith. This is what we have inherited from our forefathers, and it is our duty to preserve it.”

The Premier praised Sarawak’s religious diversity, pointing to the close proximity of mosques, Sikh temples, churches, and Chinese temples in Kuching as a testament to the state’s peaceful coexistence.

“This is the culture we have. Some of us were educated in Malay schools, others in government or mission schools, yet we continue to nurture understanding among all communities,” he said.

To formalize and support this harmony, the Premier established the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) in 2017, under the leadership of Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. The unit provides financial assistance to all religious groups, as well as support for mission and Chinese schools.

Acknowledging Sarawak’s growing revenue — from RM5 billion to RM14 billion — the Premier underscored the importance of meticulous governance and trust.

“We work hard, and God guides us. Revenue is increasing because we are doing our job with integrity. What we give to the people, God will return to us,” he said.

He also hinted at increased funding for UNIFOR, stating, “If revenue is strong, why not increase allocations? I will discuss with Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah about providing additional funding this year.”

The Premier reaffirmed his dedication to protecting Sarawak’s constitutional rights, addressing misconceptions about the state’s approach to safeguarding its resources.

“Some accuse us of being greedy, but what is right is right. Article 47 of our state constitution and the Federal Constitution are very clear. I stand on oath to protect them,” he declared.

Looking ahead, the Premier predicted Sarawak’s economy would flourish within five years, benefiting all communities.
